Yoga's Answer to Youth Violence: Transending Youths Inward and Outward Expressions of Violence
with Jim Nelson
Thursday, May 17th, 7:00pm, Introduction and Book Signing
Saturday, May 19th, 1:00 to 4:00pm Workshop.
12pm Pot Luck and Community Gathering
Youth's Four Primitive Urges of hunger, sex, sleep and self or ego-preservation are out of balance due to increasing influence of the values and exploitation of the Economic Culture. This has caused a growing malaise of emotional pain increasing youth's fear, anger, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and alienation, while muffling their conscience and intuition. Self-injurious behaviors where youth turn on themselves through cutting, bulimia, anorexia, and impulsive risk taking activities, along with outward forms of violence from bullying to gang wars are increasing.
Psychologist Jim Nelson, author of Running on Empty -- Transcending the Economic Culture's Seduction of Our Youth will breifly review the causes for these disconcerting trends and then offer a paradigm for change and transformation.
The workshop will be experiential and focus on what Swami Veda calles the Fifth Human Urge -- the urge for growth and transcendence. This urge also is found in every human being and is the key to transforming suffering and creating a meaningful and joyous life. Participants will explore how to help themselves and youth develop a clear sense of purpose and look at how to change painful emotions and cultivate the sublime emotions of love, peace and joy.
Cost for the Workshop $30.00 at the door, $25.00 online.
